Blogs that Inspire and Uplift

I wanted to take minute to let you know that I have just added two new links to my 'blogs of interest' list. I periodically find places that are interesting to me and I like to pass them on to you. This is the first time I've publicly announced any new additions. In the past, I have just added them with the word *NEW* in front of them and hoped that you might find them on your own. However, I thought better of it today. After all, how are you to really know unless I tell you, right?! :)

If you are interested in old-timey things, gaining motivation for a life of simplicity, frugality, and for days filled with encouragement and good feelings, you won't want to miss Rhonda's blog: Down to Earth & Amy's blog: Simple Folk.

After visiting with these dear ladies, I go away feeling motivated and invigorated. I hope you will be blessed by your visits as well.

Back Home Again

Well, yesterday was my last day at my temporary housekeeping job. I feel relieved that it's over, but will really miss the money as it has been such a blessing to be able to afford the little 'necessities' that I had taken for granted, once again. For example; I have been using the same razor to shave with for about two months prior to being offered this cleaning job. I hope that the mention of it hasn't grossed you out too much, but as you ladies know, shaving is a fact of life. Having shaved legs and underarms is important to ones self esteem. Not to mention, you just feel cleaner-- at least I do!

We were also able to have our cell phones reconnected after almost three weeks of being without them. Not having them was an inconvenience at best, but nothing earth shattering. Another burden has been lifted for us, in that, we now have enough money to pay off our gas bill. Hopefully, the gas company will now allow us to get a full re-fill before the cold temps arrive. (November is just a few short months away you know.) According to the gauge on the gas tank, we have been surviving on fumes for the past two months. Praise God for His blessings and provisions in our time of need!

To be honest, I was really getting discouraged about our situation here. It's hard living paycheck to paycheck, but God is showing me that in all things I need to trust Him. My ways are not His ways and that's a hard lesson that I'm still learning. There is still one major thing that is staring us in the face, but I am confident that God will work that out too and my prayer is that whatever happens His name will be glorified through it all.

During the midst of our financial struggles I received a note in my in-box that gave me inspiration. It came from Nancy Carter. Nancy is the editor for This Old Schoolhouse, Homeschool Minute.
Nancy was sharing what a crazy week it's been in their home due to several things breaking down. I could definitely relate to that as our water softener decided that it just wasn't going to condition our water anymore.

I have mentioned before in a previous post that we have well water. Well, our water here is very hard and full of rust. Without the softener, our white clothes don't stand a chance. Another reason that the softener is so important to us is that without it, our water isn't exactly palatable. Fortunately, with some investigative work on the part of my husband, he discovered the problem and after ordering the proper part, was able to fix it. As it turned out, it was all due to a broken $5 filter, about the circumference of a dime. I couldn't believe how important that small little filter was to the successful workings of my water softener! It reminded me of this quote: "The importance of the little things is often underrated because they are small; but they supply much of the actual discipline of life. There are really no nonessentials in the Christian's life. Our character building will be full of peril while we underrate the importance of the little things." Christ's Object Lessons ch. 25 p. 356 How true it is!!

Through Nancy's troubles she focused on the following bible text: " ...for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content." Phillipians 4:11 Ever since that day, this text has been a comfort to me and I posted it on my refrigerator as a constant reminder. God is so good to preserve His word throughout the centuries so that, even today, we might be encouraged and edified! May you each have a blessed Sabbath as you spend it with your family and the Creator of our universe.

Temporary Job Away From Home

I have been working away from home the past couple of weeks (cleaning apartments/houses) and have had very little time to blog. Yesterday I managed to can 26 quarts of tomato juice. However, because we had company and a birthday party to attend, I didn't get started as early as I'd hoped and was up until just after midnight to get it all done. When the alarm went off this morning, I DID NOT want to get up and go to work.

With all this working away from home business, I have a newfound respect for women who work full time and then come home to a family and house that needs attention. I don't know how they do it! By the time I get home I'm completely exhausted, my feet are killing me, and I have no energy to do anything for anyone. It's something that I'm definitely not used to. My KUDOS to all you super moms out there! Thankfully, my work will probably be completed by the end of this week and I'll be able to get back to being a full-time homeschooling mom/housewife. :)

A Word of Thanks & A Game

I have been busy with yard work and gardening today. I am now getting ready to tidy up the house and prepare our Sabbath meal for tomorrow. Before I do, I wanted to take just a moment to thank everyone for your kindness with regard to all the happy anniversary wishes, the condolences you shared with my husband and family, as well the encouragement you gave regarding our money troubles. It's such a huge comfort to know that I have friends like you to cheer my day, lending support through your all heart felt comments. Thank you!!

I thought I'd post a fun bible puzzle for you to do with your family tomorrow afternoon. It's a neat way to gather the kids around and get them involved in helping to find all the books of the bible. I must warn you though-- if you've never done this before, it is quite a challenge. Most of the books aren't obvious (highlight or circle them as you go) and you have to look VERY CAREFULLY, but don't get discouraged! :) I will post the answers for you next week.

Once you're done, come back and tell me how you did. I'm curious to know if you think the books were easy or hard to find. Also, let me know how many you found. Have fun!

Here goes:

DIRECTIONS: Find thirty (30) books of the Bible in the paragraph below. Actually, there are 31 if you can find the variant of one Old Testament prophet's name.

There are 30 books of the Bible in this paragraph. Can you find them? This is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an airplane seat pocket, on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for hours. He enjoyed it so much, he passed it on to some friends. One friend from Illinois worked on this while fishing from his john boat. Another friend studied it while playing his banjo. Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued by it she mentioned it in her weekly newspaper column. Another friend judges the job of solving this puzzle so involving, she brews a cup of tea to help her nerves. There will be some names that are really easy to spot. That's a fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam, especially since the book names are not necessarily capitalized. Truthfully, from answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or a scholar to see some of them at the worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in this paragraph. During a recent fund raising event, which featured this puzzle, the Alpha Delta Phi lemonade booth set a new record. The local paper, The Chronicle, surveyed over 200 patrons who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As Daniel Humana humbly puts it, "The books are all right here in plain view hidden from sight." Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who have to be shown. One revelation that may help is that books like Timothy and Samuel may occur without their numbers. Also, keep in mind, that punctuation and spaces in the middle are normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete really well against those who claim to know the answers. Remember, there is no need for a mad exodus; there really are 30 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in this paragraph waiting to be found. God Bless.

We've been defrauded!

Yesterday afternoon we traveled South to help some friends hand out free religious books at their County Fair. The purpose was not only to give away free books, literature and magazines, but it was also to promote a Prophecy Seminar that is being held in their area the last weekend of this month. We'll be going back to help them with the seminar.

During the fair we met some interesting people and had several good conversations. It was also nice seeing our friends again. We haven't seen them in over a year. The weather was just perfect for it too. We made it home quite late and after checking our email, we went to bed and slept in pretty late-- 9:30a.m. to be exact. Oh I know-- shame, shame!!

While my husband was looking over our bank account on-line today, he noticed a strange withdrawal for $50.00 and another for $10 something. He knew he didn't make them and was certain that I didn't. Of course he was on the phone with the bank in no time flat. After talking with our bank and being put on hold a few times, it was determined that someone from South Korea had somehow, gotten the number to my husband's debit card. Turns out, they were making purchases through the Internet with his number, therefore not needing the pin number. What a scary ordeal! According to the lady at our bank, she explained that this happens quite often and it would seem that people can pilfer your card number relatively easy. What's worse is that these guys just get away with it. It's disgusting!!

Anyway, we wound up having to drive to our main branch and get it straightened out with them. My husband had to sign some paperwork so that we could get reimbursed and so that he could get a new card issued to him. When we got there, we were shown an updated bank statement and it proved that more withdrawals than we knew had been made. It just made us sick! We certainly don't have much money and my husband told the lady at the bank that $50.00 might as well be a million to us! It's true too. We are pinching everywhere we can pinch and it's very hard to keep our ends met.

Strangely enough, my MIL noticed today, that a charge had been made to her account as well. She had to spend time on the phone to get hers straightened out too. My husband thought that these people might have gotten hold of some database list and were just going down the line. He called his older brother to warn him to keep an eye on his account too.

I guess these aren't isolated events. Their happening everywhere, all the time. So whatever you do, keep a close eye on your money.

Pet Food Recall

Did you hear about the pet food recall? Apparently the recall is only for wet pet food, sold in cans or pouches. The number of affected pets are not yet known, but pet owners are finding their animals suffering and dying of kidney failure.

What is most disturbing to me is that they don't even know what exactly it is in the food that is causing dogs & cats to become so deathly ill. In our home, we don't feed our pets wet food products, only dry food. But doesn't it make you wonder, that if they don't know what it is that is causing our pets to be so sick, how do they know it's not in the dry food too?

I was watching Fox News today and they had a pet expert on. She stated that until they announced a cause of the problem she didn't feel comfortable even feeding her pet dry food. She decided that she wasn't going to be feeding her dog any commercial food and that she would either feed her dog table scraps or homemade dog food. One thing she did make clear is, if you decide to take your pet off of commercial food, it's important to make sure and give your pet a multivitamin so that it receives the complete nutrition it needs to remain healthy.

If you would like to find out if your pet food has been affected by the recall you can read the complete list here.
